BRE and Property Tectonics Back UK’S Largest Home Assessment

The Welsh Assembly teamed up with pt and national sustainability institution The Building Research Establishment (BRE) to undertake the largest environmental assessment of homes ever undertaken in the UK.

The pilot scheme, which was part funded by the Welsh Assembly’s Best Practice Programme, measured the performance of over 30,000 existing properties operated by two of South Wales’ largest housing association consortiums Devco and GENus.

The project established a method of measuring sustainability which can be adopted by the Welsh Housing Quality Standards as a benchmark across Wales’ social housing sector.

BRE used its EcoHomes XB environmental assessment criteria, which was developed as part of its wider BREEAM measurement scheme, to complete the project and also set refurbishment standards for existing homes.

Property Tectonics contributed its wealth of experience in condition-based assessment through its latest web-based software, Lifespan-EcoHomes XB.

The revolutionary software stored, managed and reported on the data collected and allowed the participating associations to access the database to view and monitor Ecohomes XB project information, including their respective EcoHomes scores as the work proceeds.

pt and BRE continue to promote the software - the only web-based tool in the marketplace - to other users and regularly host seminars to help teach best practice.
