New state of the art recycling plant comes to Manchester.

pt Building Standards have been working with Biffa, the Birmingham based nationwide integrated waste management business on their new state of the art recycling plant at Trafford Park, Manchester.

Located off Westinghouse Road in Trafford Park, the plant will have easy access to the M60 and M602. The majority of the waste received for recycling will come from Biffa’s customers in the Greater Manchester area.

The plant will be the most advanced in the UK and will be the first of new generation of material recycling facilities Biffa will be building across the UK.

The plant uses a unique combination of mechanical and optical sorting systems and has been designed to operate with very high levels of automation and efficiency.

It will process 200,000 tonnes of waste materials per annum and achieve recycling rates of over 90 per cent.

One of the challenges facing the design team was ensuring that the fire safety strategy adopted for the building not only addressed the functional objectives of the Building Regulations but also satisfied the requirements of the Greater Manchester Act.

Additional fire safety measures have been incorporated into the building following close consultation with Manchester Fire and Rescue Service; these include, a sophisticated automatic fire detection and alarm system comprising of CCTV flame/smoke plume detectors and a smoke control system.

Managing Director of pt Building Standards, David Hodgson, commented "the company is delighted to be a part of the Biffa revolution which will provide a facility in Manchester that will achieve high recycling rates, avoid landfill and reduce the Region’s carbon footprint. Although there have been a number of challenges along the way it has been important to work closely, as a team member, with Biffa’s innovative design team to ensure this state of the art recycling plant will be ready on time"

The recycling plant will become fully operational in January 2010
